gicts Posted August 24, 2006 Report Share Posted August 24, 2006 Recently 2 friends and I moved into an apartment, setting up a wireless network. For the first 2 weeks or so everything was going well, then suddenly the past several days we've all had problems. The icons state that the internet connection is strong, but it only stays for spurts of maybe 2-3 seconds then dies. In order to get it going we have found opening several pages and connecting them to google or yahoo will give us a few seconds, but it dies once again. It is almost as if the network is full? -pops- Posted August 25, 2006 Report Share Posted August 25, 2006 Is this effect shown on one computer or several?Is the Internet connection dropping on the wireless router (you should be able to check from the pattern of lights on it)?You state you don't have a password. Alexis Blaze Posted August 25, 2006 Report Share Posted August 25, 2006 it is a wireless network right??do you in some way protect the network from outside users? like using MAC address list or something else.... if not, maybe someone you don't know is using your network extensively so it reject your request (something like DOS-Denial Of Service attack)....i don't know if it is allright to write this here (hope it's allright), but, try to download network sniffing tools like Cain & Abel to see the network traffic... and look for any suspicious ip.... cozofdeath Posted August 25, 2006 Report Share Posted August 25, 2006 For packet monitoring you might want to use Ethereal. Its free and one of the best. Not to put Cain&Abel down because it rocks but its for sniffing passwords and things of that nature and not troubleshooting network problems. Also before trying anything you may want to check your router settings and get some authentication going. Otherwise anyone can use your internet or its possible they can sniff a packet, get your mac/localip and change theirs to yours which would cause you to disconnect and they can pass mac filtering. Also its for sure a problem between the router and you so looking at your router diagnostic logs will tell you what going on. If you want you could post them on here if you don't understand something on them.In other words, get the router passworded w/ encryption and check your router logs.
