Keenor Posted August 27, 2006 Report Share Posted August 27, 2006 This is the strangest problem I've ever seen. Any shortcut that I create of an application can not be executed. As a matter of fact, when I double click on the shortcut, it is "cut" and then added to my clipboard to be pasted somewhere else. The only way to run a shortcut is to right-click and select "Open" Has this ever happened to anyone else?? And if so, what did you do? Am I going to have to re-install? A registry cleaner such as CCleaner will fix dead shortcuts and maybe even you problem. Have you looked in the shortcut properties to see what target file the shortcut is pointing to? I've added an attachment to show something of what it should look like. Clicking Find Target will open the folder containing the program the shortcut is pointing to. If none of this helps and depending on whether its happening to everyone or just your account, there are registry fixes that may help. Post back how you make out. I share a computer with my brother and he installs loads of crap, so I ran spybot, and AVG. No viruses, and only basic spyware that's there every week. No luck. Haven't ran a registry cleaner. Perhaps that will help. Thanks for the input, I just find it strange, of all things, it cuts it? EDIT: Well, I installed CCleaner, and when I attempt to run it, I get "runtime error "0"" and then "CCleaner has encountered an error and needs to close.. blah blah" so I uninstalled it and installed again (unchecking the yahoo! toolbar... :P) same problem. When you type regedit in a run box and open the registry editor it will be the top one listed on the left. If you type this below into notepad and save it to your desktop, make sure you save it as a .reg file. Double-click the file and the entrees should be added. Keenor Posted August 29, 2006 Author Report Share Posted August 29, 2006 Well I ran RegScrubXP which screwed everything up, good thing for system restore! It removed like 3000 entries or somthing, and it caused all my uninstallations to be removed... And I tried your registry script thing, and it ran successfully, but didn't fix my problem. When I double click on ANY shortcut (except for DOS ones) the icon fades, and I can paste it. Even everything on my quick launch, when I click on them nothing happens, and then I right click on my desktop and click paste, and it disappears from quick launch, and is pasted onto my desktop. Any shortcut that I wish to open, needs to be right clicked on, and "Opened." I don't think it has much to do with the registry, and even if it does, how did it happen? The only things I did prior to this problem are,-Installed a sound card-Started using WindizUpdate http://www.windowsupdate.62nds.com/ because of Automatic Update installing that "you may be a victim of..." I ran Spybot S&D, nothing, but someone told me once that there was some spyware that when tested with 3 different programs, only one found it. Perhaps I should try another? This seems like it's getting progressively worse, and I'm not one of those malicious computer destroyers either, I'm fairly careful.This is pissing me off. I'll probably just re-install. I could be wrong but even so it sounds like you have many errors in your registry. The Windows registry is one of the most important things to keep maintained even though many people forget. Just about every setting is storted in it. The problems you listed are usually associated with registry problems. If you can't run the registry cleaner I'm all out of ideas for now. Keenor Posted August 29, 2006 Author Report Share Posted August 29, 2006 RegScrubXP tried to remove like 3400 entries. Is that right? I stopped it after like 20 cuz it was taking like 10 minutes... Which means it would take forever! And when I realized it was removing something to do with "Uninstall" I checked my add/remove programs to be almost empty, so I restored. Should I just go through with it? Run RegScrub and let it do what it has to do? Is there any program that isn't nessesarily a Registry Cleaner, more of a restore or fix? Thanks. Registry tools are usually a very handy thing to keep around and almost always have backup features built in them. I use one every so often and have never had problems with it yet.
