smilineric Posted September 14, 2006 Report Share Posted September 14, 2006 Hello Everyone,I have a Compaq laptop who's monitor is slowly going out so I need to transfer my files to a new system as soon as I can. I have recently built a desktop and was planing on running a standalone copy of Windows XP Home that a friend of mine has lent me and simply put in the product key located on the bottom of my laptop (which is also Windows XP Home). The key is 5 sets of 5 alphanumeric characters (no weird OEM code) so I thought it would work. However, every time I enter the code, Windows says that it is not a valid key. Is there no way to use an OEM key on a standalone version of Windows? I won't be using the laptop any longer so it isn't like there would be multiple computers using this key.
