Choosing a external hard drive.

Hi, I was looking at a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 250GB External Hard Drive, and I was wondering if it would be the right buy, because I am looking for a external hard drive that doesn't "back up" files. What I want, is a external hard drive that lets me put files on it, and then lets me view/use them without having to put them back on my computer's hard drive, just to use them. Because the current external hard drive I have lets me put the files on it, but then if I want to view them/use them, I have to put them back on my computer. So in lighter terms, I am looking for a external hard drive that lets me use/view those files without putting them back on my computer's hard drive.

The system you describe of having to transfer files from an external drive to an internal one to read them is rather strange to me. What is the make/model of your drive that acts like this?

All the external hard drives I have seen, and installed, behave as though they are normal drives when they are connected to a computer. Their contents can be written/read directly and do not have to be transferred to another drive before being usable.

My Western Digital external drive behaves exactly the same as an internal drive with one exception. If I want to stop it running, I first have to click an icon in the bottom right hand corner and select to disconnect, and then wait until told that it is safe to do so. I have been very pleased with this drive to date. When it is running I can do all the operations that my internal drives are capable of. My Acronis backup is on there.
