Have you ever been able to burn disks on that machine?

What disk burning software do you have installed?

The burner in Windows XP is not the best one that is available and it will only burn CDs (not DVDs) so if that is the one you are trying to use, can I suggest that you look at something a bit more versatile.

Nero is one of the most popular disk burning programs and you can get it quite cheaply.

Thanks for reply.

Yes, I have been burning cds from my windows media player but has stopped recently. I am using the software that comes with windows media centre

I agree with what pops says, but also it may be that the burner doesn`t like the disc you are using, have you tried a different make.

Thanks for reply

Yes I have tried several different types they are all recognised on my fathers machine

Maybe it has been caused by one of XP latest updates, they have switched on and off various other programs when they have been loaded.

If you are confident inside a PC, with the power off while working inside the box and suitable anti-static precautions, unplug the leads to the drive, boot up then shut down.

Re connect the leads and boot up again, XP should then find the drive again and re-install it.
