Network cards active but not connecting

Hi, my friend has a laptop that has wifi and regular network card. They both can connect to the network, get an IP address, all's well. The only problem is when I try to use the internet it will act as though I am not connected. I know that the networks working, I plugged in another laptop and it works fine. Is there something Windows controls that will prevent me to connect to the internet by any means (i.e. AIM, IE)?

Here are some specs on the laptop:

Firewall has been tried both on and off

no antivirus active

WiFi w/ b & g

regular network card

Windows XP, all up to date

laptop is a Compaq, about 6 mos old.
