JesseJ1935 Posted December 10, 2006 Report Share Posted December 10, 2006 Today I was going to start to put some of my collection of 45 and 78 rpm records on my computer. Problem, I seem to have lost the Volume controls for a start. Go to Programmes>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control and up comes the message 'There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click add Hardware. This programme will now close.'Just for curiosity, where does 'Printers' come into it? Not that I'm bothered. Anyhow, went to Control Panel and clicked on Add Hardware, selected the sound system and was told that it is working properly. For good measure, I went into Device Manager and everything is shown as working.Next I tried a programme I have, RIP Vinyl, I also have Magix Audio Cleaning Lab BTW, and when I clicked on Monitor the message came up 'The sound card is in use by another application. Stop recording in that application and press the monitor button to try again. Error: 00000004'I'm stuck now, where do I go from here? To the best of my knowledge I'm not using the sound card, not for recording anything anyhow.. And even if I was, that wouldn't stop the Volume Controls from showing, or would it?The speakers are Creative Inspire 2.1 2400 for which there are no drivers needed. Having said that, sometime ago I think I installed Sound Max drivers when I was looking for updated drivers. I should add that I still have sound from them, they play music on my playlists without any trouble.Any help will be gratefully received. -pops- Posted December 10, 2006 Report Share Posted December 10, 2006 First of all try re-booting, preferably a cold re-boot where you shut down and switch off the mains and then power up again only after 15 - 30 minutes.If that doesn't work, I would try and reload the sound card drivers. As I said there are no drivers from Creative but I can try your other suggestion and see if I can get new drivers for the sound card.BTW I've been to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and that says No Audio Device installed, also the General Tab is greyed out. I've found an oldish CD with a back up of all the drivers. It has one folder labelled Legacy Audio Drivers, might it be an idea to restore them? JesseJ1935 Posted December 10, 2006 Author Report Share Posted December 10, 2006 Managed to resolve this now, thanks to pops for pointing me in the right direction. Checked for new drivers, even though Creative did not rquire them, at Driver Genius. It came up with an updated audio driver which turned out to be another player. It also had more controls than the original Volume Controls with Windows. Went to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, the General Tab was still greyed out. Clicked on the Audio tab and found that There was now an option to Windows default, that of VIA Audio Deck so selected that for both sound and recording. Thanks for the warning, I'm very careful about what I download from them, I downloaded a driver sometime ago from them that sent my computer haywire, I had to uninstall it before the computer worked properly again.
