Hello,

I have windows XP home on my second computer. I would like to create an account that basically has absolutely no privileges. All the user should be able to do is go online and use only programs that I have installed previously. I would also like the computer to boot automatically into this account....

Is this possible in XP home and how can I do it?

Thanks!

A limited account with an automatic logon sounds like what you want. To turn on automatic logon for that account click Start, run, type "control password2", Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click Apply. Type the password in the automatic logon window twice and click ok. If you want to restrict her from more customized things you will have to edit the registry or control her permissions. You would have to post what exactly else you would like to stop her from doing. Hope it helps.

What exactly does a limited account allow?

The only thing the user should be able to do, Is go online and use only the programs that I have installed on the computer.

--------------

It might seem over controlling, but the computer is in decent shape and I don't want it ruined like her last computer. I want her to be able to use a nice computer when she comes over, I think this will keep the computer nice....

Well the one thing you could do is get a second hard drive in your computer , Then install a Linux System in that hard drive. ( making your computer a "Dual Booter" )

And then telling your sister that "she can no longer use your XP system" but to "use the Linux system instead"..

Then you wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.. With a linux system you set a master password for the system , Then you can set up an account with limited rights ( not a sudo'er ) for her..

The master password account is for you wich would have access to such things like: A disk partitioner , Software installers , etc

-OR-

You could tell your sister to get her own computer..... :D B)

Unfortunately, Linux is not an option, she needs the comfort and familiarity of windows.

I wish! :D

There is nothing uncomfortable or unfamiliar about it.. , Just a differant system thats all...

Is she in-capable of learning something new...?? Just asking..

Limited account

The limited account is intended for someone who should be prohibited from changing most computer settings and deleting important files. A user with a limited account:

• Cannot install software or hardware, but can access programs that have already been installed on the computer.

• Can change his or her account picture and can also create, change, or delete his or her password.

• Cannot change his or her account name or account type. A user with a computer administrator account must make these kinds of changes.

She shouldn't be able to harm anything, and since she will not have the right to install programs she will be protected from most malicious programs. On top of that she won't be able to shutdown services or change important system files.
