CD/DVD drivers corrupt in Vista-error code 39

I've been playing with a new Vista install over the last few days, last night I decided to load some software.. popped the disk in the DVD drive and nadda. When I looked in My Computer, the DVD drive wasn't there and when I checked in device manager there was one of those horrible yellow exclamation marks. I checked out the driver information and it seemed ok, so I uninstalled the driver and rebooted and Windows tried to load it again but told me that there was a problem.. when I checked the details I was given error code 39.

I was a bit stuck, I couldn't run anything from the CD because it wasn't working, Windows update told me I had everything I needed and everytime I tried uninstalling the driver Windows just reloaded it automatically on reboot, I wasn't even given the option to search somewhere else for it........... grrrr!

So after a few hours of futile fiddling I did a bit of searching on the net and came across this post

Fantastic... when I looked in the registry mine was exactly the same, I didn't have the first registry key mentioned in the KB article but I did have the second. So I did my backup and then deleted the key and rebooted and tada........... There was my DVD drive. :D

One little note for you... the run command is no longer on the start menu in Vista so you can't go Start > Run and then type regedit (or whatever). That had me flumouxed for a bit but then I typed Run in the Search box at the bottom of the start menu and it brought up the Run program for me. B)

Strange one that Nellie, I tried beta 2 on two different computers and had no problems with either DVD drive.

I wonder if it is anything to do with the motherboard drivers.

I had no problems on a previous install of Vista either, but this one decided to play silly. I don't know why though.
