Ghostnotes
Hello everyoneI just purchased a brand new seagate 300GB ATA/100 and have a few questions about setting it up and moving files.I'm not new to this in the basic way but i'm not even sure if what i want to do can be done so let me start at the begining.I have a pc with 4 hard drives 2 internal 2 external, 1st harddrive is a maxtor 160GB almost full, the second is 80Gb almost full. The first external is 80GB almost full and the second external is a 40GB almost full. The problem is I have 4 operating systems: XP PRO SP1/Server 2003enterprise/XP PRO MCE and Vista. As i was reading the setup instructions that came with the new drive it states it will copy over system files along with other files if you want to make it the master, this would be a no brainer if i only had one O/S but i keep my xp pro sp1 that way because I WILL NOT put sp2 on it, that is why i have MCE and Vista because games/apps are coming out now that will not run on sp1.What I'm trying to do if you figured it out already is make the 300 my master and move most if not all of my "junk" to it Here is what Seagate says:Make your new drive the boot drive (optional)1. Use DiscWizard to copy boot files to your newSeagate drive. Indicate that you want to bootyour computer from your new Seagate driveand that you want to keep the old drive in thesystem. DiscWizard automatically copies thesystem and data files from your old drive toyour new Seagate drive. If you prefer, you can use the “Copy Files” optionto perform manually those steps that DiscWizardperforms for you automatically, as follows:a. Double-click on the DiscWizard icon. (If you havenot already installed DiscWizard, see Before youbegin on page 2.)b. Select Maintenance from the DiscWizard menu.c. Select Copy files in the maintenance-optionsmenu.d. Choose the source and destination hard discs.e. Start the copy procedure.2. Reconfigure the drives.a. With power off, remove both hard drives fromyour computer.b. Change the master/slave jumpers to configureyour new Seagate drive as the master and yourold drive as the slave (refer to the instructions onpage 6, but use different settings).c. Reinstall both drives in your computer and restartyour computer.d. Your computer recognises and boots from yournew hard drive. DO NOT repartition or formatthe drives. If necessary, see Make sure yourcomputer detects both drives on page 10 forBIOS/CMOS setup instructions. You’re done! You can now copy files or install software onto yournew Seagate hard drive.I'm guessing i could remove my internal slave drive and install the 300, run the wizard, partition it into 4 partitions and run through the steps 3 times and then set it to master and remove the old master , reinstall the 4th drive and do it one last time. Will this work or should i just buy an external usb adapter and just leave the os'es alone and file transfer the rest. If you need screenshots of my system let me knowI also have partition majic 8.0 that did all of the work before, should i use this if it can be done instead?I also thought you could not move an O/S from one drive to the next?? Thanks for putting up with this long windedness
-pops-
Two things I don't understand:1. Why you won't install SP2 on your XP system.2. Why you need so many similar operating systems on one machine.
Ghostnotes
The reason is that in the past, i have had trouble with programs that i have on my pc with sp2 and some of them are just too hard to find again. As far as all the os'es like i said some only run with sp2 and some will not and i just wanted to check them out. I will probably end up keepnig xp prosp1 and vista. So far I like vista it seems very stable on my system and i like the feel of it plus it already has media center on it so i will get rid of xpmce and server enterprise was another one i wanted to check out.Last but not least , Im a tinkerer
Ghostnotes
Ok I answered you question , can you answer mine?
-pops-
The only time that SP2 gives problems is when you try to install it on a faulty installation of XP. You should get your O/S working properly before proceeding much further. If you don't you will find that it will become less and less useful and more insecure as your ability to update it will diminish. What I do if I want to tinker around with different systems is to have them on physically separate drives such that I can unplug one and plug in another. I would never think of installing more than one O/S on a single drive, not even in a separate partition.I don't do much tinkering now as, being the age I am, I want a quiet life but my last tinker computer had a hard drive in a removable caddy so that swap from one O/S to another quite easily.I don't see any point in having MCE Pro and XP Pro on the same machine at all, especially as your XP is incomplete.Do you have a full version of Vista or one of the RC versions? If the latter, don't grow too attached to it as it will soon stop working.
babysun
For the past 2 years I have been using XP + SP2 never had any issue with SP2. And I do back pops for the vulnerablity of XP without SP2. As a tinker you might want to give a try using SP2 over the fresh installation of XP.
