Windows XP Pro requires a full version of 3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT4 or XP Home.

Windows XP Home requires a full version of 3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT 4.

You can only upgrade Windows XP Home to Windows XP Pro, not the other way around.

Any version of Windows will work standalone, if it is a Full Version (not an upgrade version).

I am unsure about 2003, but I believe it is the same thing as XP. I am also unsure of NT. I believe it works with NT 4.0 but not NT 3.X. You must also have all service packs before updating. For 2000 you need SP4 and NT you need SP6.

Upgrading to Vista can be answered here...

and

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getr...or/default.mspx - must have 32-bit XP to run the update advisor (checks your hardware)

No one can really tell you because besides your current operating system which must be XP or Win2000 you also must meet certain hardware requirements.
