Moving Windows XP hard drive to a different laptop

Hi,

I need to move a hard drive with Windows XP installed from Dell Latitude D610 laptop to Latitude D620 but i'm concerned that i might get in trouble because of that windows activation thing, because hardware on the target laptop is different. I'm mostly concerned that windows might lock and not give access any more even when put back to the old laptop - i had this situation with moving hard drive to another desktop computer once - it says something about activation error and reboots.

Any ideas if it's safe to do?

PS. By the way, it's a bundle version of Windows XP so it didn't require activation (or was pre-activated?).

Thank you,

Andrey

It was possibly pre-activated. You will be asked to activate again, not to mention a mess of driver problems upon starting up.

Why do you need to move the hard drive? If you want to keep files and settings, you can use the Files and Settings Transfer wizard that is a part of Windows XP.

You are right - i didn't think about it. Thanks!
