Ports are blocked??

None of my programs are able to reach the internet and connect to look for or receive updates.

I have a broadband connection that works well; I am able to get to any web site I want.

I assume that my browser uses a certain port, that's obviously active, but that the program update routines use other port(s).

All these programs that need access to update are listed in the "allowed access" section of my McAfee firewall. Evenstill I have tried disabling my McAfee firewall, no luck. My Windows firewall is not activated.

I have Windows XP Pro, service pack 2 and I'm using IE6. I loaded IE7, but reverted.

what is the program you're trying to update, is there an error message or any pointer?

if you suspect ports, from cmd run:

> netstat -p tcp 2 (this will observe the activity on ports, have that dos window open , then run your update, notice the changes. 2 = refresh time ) but since your fw is off.... might not give you any clues. better yet - use event viewer.

try doing a 'clean boot' (go to safe mode and disable all startup items in msconfig + look for non-ms services and disable them too), restart, if that helps try enabling startup items one by one or half on / half off.

do these programs require ie to run or do standalone updates? if former, verify that the activex settings are enabled for the _internet_ zone in the tools-internet options-security interface.

Browsers use port 80 (http) or 433 (https)

Do you use a router? If so, you may need to forward the port on your router.
