Win98 Can't Shut Down

Recommended Posts

I have a Compaq Armada laptop running Windows98. I recently installed the Yahoo DSL software, but somewhere along the line it flubbed up and I had to manually reboot the machine.

Well, I got the DSL hookup installed, but now I'm unable to shut my machine down. When I choose "Shut Down" from the Windows menu (and yes, I'm careful to choose "Shut Down" from the window that then pops up), the laptop appears to be shutting down -- but then it reboots.

I have to manually power-off it when it's just about the reboot; not a major problem, but a headache to be sure.

How can I fix this? I'm new to Windows so I don't feel qualified to go digging around on my own. I'd hate to call Yahoo because I expect it will be a major runaround. Thanks in advance for your help!

If pops suggestions don't work you could also try this...

Click Start button, run, type regedit and press enter. When the registry editor pops up navigate to the following key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

In that key should see this label PowerdownAfterShutdown. Set its value to 1.

Its very important you don't change any other values and you will probably want to backup the registry just in case.

There have been lots of known W98 shutdown problems.

Have a look at these to see if they are of any help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239887

Thank you kindly! Turns out I just needed to disable the Quick Shutdown option in the Advanced tab. (Good news for anyone else who may have this problem -- unlikely though that is.)

Thanks again..
