Update Keeps Updating After Reboot Need Help

Hi,

Does anyone know of a thread they can point me to or suggest a reg edit for this.

Everytime I shut down my HP XP laptop it says updates ready to be installed. I click shutdown, it installs 1 update. When I restart and go to shut down again it does it again. It is putting directories in root directory each time and not removing them.

I think this started when I insalled the lattest Norton antivirus however I am not sure.

Is it a Windows (or Microsoft) update that your are getting, or some kind of Norton update?

If it's Microsoft or Windows, then go and check C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log - it should give you some information on the update that failed (including the error code). Check near the bottom; check date & time of the last update failure.

Thank you for posting the log. The information in the log states repeatedly

Update is not allowed to download due to regulation

Here is a Microsoft KB article that describes the message: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910340 - basically it says to use Microsoft Update instead of automatic update.

Can you try this and see if it succeeds?

Hello,

I ran the updates manually off microsoft, did not really want IE 7.0 but what the heck, and the problem is still there.

The small yello icon keeps asking me when I start the computer too. It wants to install 4.0 SP2 Secruity Update (KB927978) I can click it all night and it will keep trying. That is probably where the loop is.

So I turned off Auto update and the problem went away of course. So I guess I will just leave auto update off. Probably better to do that anyway.

BTW if I turn Auto update back on the problem comes back the same.

As an aside, I never use Auto Update. Microsoft have produced some real dogs of updates in the past - ones which have caused computers to crash, slow down or fail completely. Because of this, I will let MS tell me of an update but I always wait a few days before installing and keep a check on any reports of the update(s) causing problems. Only when there is the all clear will I download.

This applies to any updates, not only the ones from MS. In fact, with other updates, I am very wary about applying them under any circumstances. If my software is working in the way I want it to, I don't seen the point in disturbing that for the sake of some (often) very minor change in the GUI or similar.

No I am saying that after I did microsoft update from the site, it still wanted to install KB927978 on reboots and shutdowns. That seems to be the update it keep wanting to install. Sure wish I knew how to stop it. KB927978 was not one of the updates that I got off the MS site.

This is highly unusual - at least I have never seen, or heard of such a situation: AutoUpdate offering an update that you don't get on Microsoft Update.

One question (which may or may not give us an answer): are you using

• http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ ?
  
• http://update.microsoft.com/ ?

Maybe I need to clarify something. This is an update that has already been downloaded and ready to install. It does not say downloading updates or do you want to download this update. It just says downloaded updates ready to install.

When I did the update as you asked I used http://update.microsoft.com/

From the log you supplied earlier, it appears as if the update was not downloaded. This means that Microsoft Update should still detect the missing update and offer it.

At this stage I would recommend that you download the update manually from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...1B-6F18FE6921D4 and install it from there.
