Sound problem

Recommended Posts

I normally use a Plantronics USB headset. My dog chewed through the cord, so I'm trying to use my speakers. This is where the problem lies. The speakers are Stereo and no sound comes out. I have tried two MoBo's with 2 different ports on each with 2 different speaker sets. I have the output set to my sound driver rather than my headset. What must I do to get my speakers to work?

Are these powered speakers intended for use with a computer?

Ordinary speakers meant to be used with audio equipment will not normally work with the 1 V p/p signal from a motherboard pre-amp.

Well one of the speakers is from Dell, the other is from JBL; so, yeah, I'm pretty sure they're intended for use with a PC. I do hear crackling when they're on, but no sound. All the options in volume are all the way up.

I'm not really sure how Stereo speakers are supposed to show up here(Sound CP). I had a USB set a long time ago, and I got those to work fine. Those have broken as well.

What shows up under the Sound CP is:

Realtek AC97 Audio

This is my driver I believe. Is that what should show? Is that driver bad?

Try looking in your Device Manager for any errors. If there are non make sure your Windows Audio service is on. To do that Click the Start button, select Run and type "services.msc", click OK. Then scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure its Started and set to Automatic. If that doesn't solve it what error do you get when you try playing a music file?

If there are no errors in device manager, the audio service is on, and no errors occur when trying to play a file with sound I would suspect damaged speakers (unless you can here them, which you can), a mute setting somewhere, a specific music format unable to play for various reasons, input/output connectors not installed correctly.

Try looking in "Sounds and Audio Devices" in your control panel to make sure mute is unchecked and device volume is up. On the voice tab in sounds and audio make sure the default device for Voice Playback is Realtek HD Audio Rear Playback or something similar. You can also test the Hardware and make sure all your codecs, etc. are installed correctly from the tabs. Do you have the Sound Effect Manager in your control panel? If so thats a good diagnostic tool.

Sorry, its not the best diagnostic program but it will tell you your audio driver version, directx version, audio controller, and audio codec in the general part and you can run a speaker test and make sure your connections are correct in the speaker configuration part. I'm running out of ideas. Is there any errors at all or is there just silence? Maybe trying different speakers or a different media player?
