you could try this posted by bvw

Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line: net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

Type exit to close the command prompt.

Be sure to type the commands carefully

i dont think that will work in 98SE mate

i think what you need to do is firstly fix the registry, to do thats restart computer in ms-dos, to do that select start, shut down computer and then select restart in ms-dos

when in dos, type "scanreg/fix" (without the quotes)

when the registry has fixed its self then restart computer

come back after you have done this

ok think your right mate ,try this then

Remove and then reinstall the Active Setup and Windows Update files. To do so, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Internet Options.

On the General tab click Settings, click View Objects.

Locate the following file (if it exists) WUV3IS.DLL. Right click the file and then click Delete.

Locate the following files (if they exist). Right-click one of the files, and then click Update.

Wusysinfo

Wuredirinforb

InstallEngineCTL Object

When you are prompted to install Active Setup, click Yes.

Close the Downloaded Program Files window.

Click OK, and then click OK again.

Find and then delete the following files:

Asctrls.ocx

Inseng.dll

Wudetect.dll

Wupdatto.dll

Wuredirb.dll

To find a file, click Start, point to Find, click "Files or Folders," type the name of the file you want to find in the Named box, and then click Find Now. To delete a file, right-click it, and then click Delete.

Restart your computer, and then connect to the Windows Update site to see if the problem is resolved.

In the future ...........if some old fellar like me (who has the brains to fix cars and aircraft).....develops a similar problem........this >IS< the cure .........and it is as simple as clicking the help button in IE6 going to control panel and click on add and remove Microsft Internet Explorer IE6 SP1 then .....repair.....all the missing downloaded program files, (update class, macromedia shock and flash), will be fixed after you reboot.....You do need to download and re-install the macro media players.....otherwise it's all in the repair function.........

well since most people use xp now and the repair option in I/E is not available in xp I would have just stuck the xp cd in and choose the repair option.
