-pops-
Do you have more than one anti-virus scanner installed on your machine? If so, remove the one(s) you like the least. Having multiple A/V software can cause conflicts and the effects you are experiencing. This might explain your defrag problem as well. twofiveuk
I only use one virus scanner which is now avast, I tried AVG free and Trend Micro online scan and they all have the same problem. The problem started two days ago and I can't seem to run any fixing programs to completion either before I get the blue screen of death and a reboot. cozofdeath
Since you are using different programs and they all seem to fail it seems it could be a Windows problem. You could try running your System File Checker. You can do that by clicking on your Start button, select run, type sfc /scannow and click ok. -pops-
What is the message on the blue screen? By that I mean the Windows explanation as to why it crashed which will appear near the top. Don't bother with the majority of the information on the remainder of the page.
twofiveuk
What is the message on the blue screen? By that I mean the Windows explanation as to why it crashed which will appear near the top. Don't bother with the majority of the information on the remainder of the page.Hi there,Thanks for the suggestions so far. I ran sfc /scannow but this didn't seem to result in anything, just finished and nothing else.I was able to get the blue screen error details when I last ran an Avast! scan:KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERRORSTOP: 0X00000077 (0XC0000185, 0XC0000185, 0X00000000X 0X0208B000)I have just looked on Google and found the Microsoft knowledge base article relating to this error, but it's not very clear as to what this error is all about. It suggests a virus in the boot sector, or a conflict of hardware, or harddisk failure. My system is an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 1gig DDR memory and a 200GB HDD built by MESH so I don't know all the details of the system. Thanks again

tk27
My Windows XP Home edition keeps crashing before finishing a virus scan, I tried three different virus scanners and they all have the same problem. When I try to defragment my computer using windows it crashes before finishing. Please help because I don't really want to install window all over again if possible.as the kb article says, it can be anything from boot sector virus to a hw related issue :"- View the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that help you determine the device that is causing the error. - Bad block. Stop 0x77 is caused by a bad block in a paging file, or a disk controller error, or in extremely rare cases it is caused when non-paged pool resources are unavailable. - If you can restart your computer after the error message, Autochk runs automatically and tries to map out the bad sector. If for some reason Autochk does not scan the hard disk for errors, manually start the disk scanner. If your computer is formatted with the NTFS file system, run Chkdsk /f /r on the system partition. You must restart your computer before the disk scan begins. If you cannot start your computer due to this issue, use the Command Console and run Chkdsk /r. - Defective or unreliable random access memory (RAM) is another common cause of this issue. - Verify that all the adapter cards in your computer are properly seated. - Disable system caching in the BIOS to see if this resolves the error. - If this does not resolve the issue, your computer mainboard (motherboard) may be damaged. "1 obtain latest virus database. 2 make backup of you documents/settings.3 scan in safe mode.4 try booting from nav cd and scan for bootsect viri. 5 boot from xp/2000 cd, go to recovery console , run chkdsk /r/f6 check memory with 'memtest x86' (http://www.memtest.org/#downiso)good luck! As for fixing it, I would try as cozofdeath says and do a sfc /scannow before going any further.
