Coreper Posted February 7, 2007 Report Share Posted February 7, 2007 i'll start this story completely from the beginning:we have got a computer which was very slow, and has never been formattedso i thought: lets format that pc and put Windows XP back on itso i put the windows xp cd in, booted from the cd, selected to install Windows XP, formatted the C: drivethen it started the setup; i noticed that the cd drive was acting like it couldnt read the cd properly; and then it gives an error: it cant read the cd properly [reading error, forgot the name]i tried copying the Windows CD to another CD and using that one, but that didnt work [same error message]it cant see any memory sticks, so that option is gone...(1) how can i solve this?note: i reinstalled Windows XP on another computer, and it did work there without any problem!so i start to think the error is in the CD-Drive [i have got a computer here which has got another Cd-Drive left, so maybe i could use that one? if it works]another reason to think this is that, is because the CD worked fine on my computer [i could easily copy all the files to my computer{'cause i wanted to put them on a memory stick... > it didnt work}](2) could it be possible that the CD-Drive suddenly begon malfunctioning? cozofdeath Posted February 7, 2007 Report Share Posted February 7, 2007 You probably don't want to hear this but it sounds like its the cd. Either a scratch or fingerprint or something. Sometimes you can't even really see the marks or they won't come unless wiped with a wet paper towel and dried. That will cause the weird cd reading noises that sounds like the cdrom is having a problem. If may only be in a certain spot so 1% to 99% of the files could get read until that spot. Scarecrow Man Posted February 8, 2007 Report Share Posted February 8, 2007 Not exactly.First of all, if you are going to do that, make sure your other HDD is unplugged to avoid confusion (for you and the boot record). Then install windows as normal. After you have installed it, swap it back to the old computer, and you will be prompted with several new driver found messages. Usually this is OK, just install your drivers and all is well, but it does not always work. You may have to remove and re-install some drivers manually.You will also have to re-activate if you have already on the other machine, so I suggest skipping activation until it is in the machine it will be staying in.It would be much easier to swap the CD-ROM if that is an option.
