Ianator Posted February 10, 2007 Report Share Posted February 10, 2007 hey, my grandfather just gave me his old laptop that he has not used in along time and I was trying to update it and am having alot of trouble...Its a Windows XP SP1. which is part of the problem...I have Windows update turned ON and it says I need to update "Microsoft windows installer 3.1" so I download it and then hit install and it "thinks" for a bit and then says "the following were unable to be successfully installed--Microsoft windows update 3.1"Heres a screen shot...even though it says "must be restarted to take effect" it <b>DOES NOT WORK:</b>http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...ud/scrnsht.jpgso I reboot and the above process repeats its self over and over.well, to try something different I googled that program (Microsoft windows installer 3.1) that it is trying to update and downloaded in manually and installed it...and after it anstalled everything it said "access denied" and Uninstalled everything it just put on...I want to download SP2 but I figure I have to get all the updates until I get to a point where its ready to get the SP2 update...I just can't install this one.I cannot seem to figure out whats the problem. Alan2273 Posted February 10, 2007 Report Share Posted February 10, 2007 What I generally do if I have to install XP SP1 and SP2 separately is to format the drive using the XP CD then install XP SP1 and then install SP2 before connecting to the net to update anything. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted February 11, 2007 Report Share Posted February 11, 2007 Welcome to the Windows Forum!First, your link with the error message does not work, so we cannot tell what your error is.Second, you mention Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D in connction with virus; they both check only for adware and spyware, not viruses. I don't know what Norton product you have - is it antivirus?Before installing SP2, make 100% sure that Windows is not infected with any malware, otherwise the SP2 installation will go very badly.As for Windows Installer 3.1, you can download and install it from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...38-DE776FD4138CLet us kow how it goes. Ianator Posted February 11, 2007 Author Report Share Posted February 11, 2007 oh! sorry bout that...I thought I checked that link.http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l106/yourbud/scrnsht.jpgit has a number of antimalware stuff... everything on the computer is running smoothly except for that.Just last night, I turned the computer on and it checked for updates again and installed 60 updates--most of which were "windows security updates"...I'm going to go check again...thanks.ps Alan...I would do that but there is at least a thousand dollars of software on there that I really don't want to have to go re-instal... Ianator Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Share Posted February 13, 2007 ok so I finally got to a place where Windows update told me I needed SP2 so I did it and got the same error message "access denied" anyhow, I used my own resources (he he Google) and came up with an official Windows article dealing with this problem so I followed the Resestry enditing steps and am now in the process of installing sp2.
