styxxxone Posted February 12, 2007 Report Share Posted February 12, 2007 I had an E-machine that I had Windows XP on (OEM CD direct from Microsoft). I took the hard drive, CD-Rom drive and DVD drive out and put them in a new Antec Sonata II case with a 450 watt PS, ASUS A8N5X motherboard, Athlon 64 3800+ CPU,PNY GeForce 6600 PCI-E graphics card and a Mitsumi 7in1 floppy . My problem is that after power on and making the neccessary BIO'S update and changes the next screen gives a choice of windows startups because of significant hardware changes (rememember I the old hard drives with windows is still there). If I choose "normal startup" mode I get a loop that reboots the computer and takes me back to the same screen. The same thing happens the second time I choose "normal startup" It loops again, but, this time it locks up my keyboard (unlocks if I turn the machine off and back on). Ditto on the choices for "Last known good configuration" and "Safe" mode . . I have even tried reloading windows from my CD , but it locks up on the Black windows logo screen. -pops- Posted February 12, 2007 Report Share Posted February 12, 2007 The OEM version of XP (loaded on to a hard drive) is tied to the machine it was first loaded on to. If you replace parts - especially the motherboard - and retain the hard drive, windows recognises that as a different machine and that is the reason for it not loading.The only way to get an OEM version to load in a different machine is to install it on a new hard drive - one which has not had an operating system installed on it previously. However, this is not going to be of any help to you because when you activate this new setup, records at Microsoft will show that it is a new machine and the activation will fail. cozofdeath Posted February 16, 2007 Report Share Posted February 16, 2007 Yeah, if I remember right its tied to the bios. So you could change whatever you want even possibly the motherboard, not have to activate, but you will need that same bios. Thats what makes OEMs decent sometimes. I don't think they do the hardware hash thing were you can't change over three parts or the motherboard with out having to reactivate because OEMs don't have to activate.
