doug Posted February 24, 2007 Report Share Posted February 24, 2007 Now down at me chum's in Salisbury and he's having a very irritating problem. He's using IE 6.0 having had major problems with IE7. He's also on NTL - cable using a wireless connection. His problem is that when he first clicks on the IE icon after some time he gets a page not displayed error. Following through the suggestion to go to tools/Internet options/connections/LAN settings He is using a proxy server - http://local host on port 2323. By disabling the local host and clicking on automatically detect settings OK he can the make his connection. The problem is that he has to do this every time. cozofdeath Posted February 24, 2007 Report Share Posted February 24, 2007 You could find what program is running on 2323 and disable/close/reconfigure it to not be used as a proxy. A simple way to find out whats using the port is a program like Active Ports. You could use the command like netstat -b to find out. Once you find what program is using the port or waiting for the traffic just end the process in the task manager and take it out of the computers startup folder or via msconfig.exe. While waiting for suggestions I found that there was an awful lot of stuff running at startup. Pared this right down - after setting restore point and re-booted. Bingo problem gone and a much faster startup. Set a new restore point. Then because his AVG was giving funny messages on startupto say that he shoulod be using Ver 7.5 when in fact he was I downloaded a fresh copy of 7.5, deleted the old one from remove programs. Rebooted and before logging on did a fresh install of AVG. Did a full scan - all OK, set a fresh restore point. All now ticketyboo! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
