stephmayes Posted March 12, 2007 Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 HiI thought I understood to a certain extent about file sharing and wireless networking, however it would appear I dont !Im trying to file share another computer linked up via ethernet to a wirless router that serves 2 existing laptops, wirelessly.I have successfully file shared between the 2 wireless laptops however i have recently aquired an inherited desktop computer from my mum (Irene on the forum..thanks mum !).I have gone into create a network on the new desktop and managed to on the surface of it, file share. I know this as the hand is underneath all the correct document on the desktop computer. However when i go to network places on the LAPTOPS , i dont see the desktop computer file shared documents...i just see the 2 established shared laptops..When i go to network places on the DESKTOP COMPUTER, it just shows the desktop shared documents and not the laptops.I have so researched this prior to posting this as i know there is an idiot guide on this forum however im convinced everything it guides me to do i have done but without the results..Anyone help please ? Now that's strange... You're sure they have shared files, and File and Printer sharing is turned on, on all three machines? You can use the network setup wizard to do this for you. Although when i view network places on the desktop comp, it only shows the desktop stuff, when i click into view work group computers it allows me from the desktop comp to view one but not the other laptop. the other laptop says i dont have permission ? The item beside the Full Computer Name is your computer name.Its a good idea to have a simple name like laptop1, laptop2, or desktop.Then, on a different computer, navigate to start > run > \\laptop1(or the other name you chose) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
stephmayes Posted March 13, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 13, 2007 SCM.I have managed to nearly get there.. I can see all of the computer now in the workgroup folder. I can access the files i want to from there. The only problem ive got now is one of the laptops is not accessible from the desktop computer. When i click on it from the desktop, it comes up that the admistrator has not permitted access. How can i enable access ? On view work group on all 3 computers there are all there. This is what I now have.Lets say the desktop is 'the office' (xp home edition)(the new one with the problem)then we have laptop1(home edition)then laptop2.(Xp professional)All 3 computers as i say, recognise, icon wise, all computers in work group.When in workgroup on the office computer, i can access laptop 1 but not laptop2 .. it says that" access is not possible. do not have permission to use this network source. Contact the administrator" etc etcI can access and view laptop 1 in this modeWhen on laptop 2, I can view and access all computer on the workgroup.Same for laptop 1. Scarecrow Man Posted March 14, 2007 Report Share Posted March 14, 2007 I dont think being on a previous network would effect anything, but I think you may be onto something with the XP Professional on Laptop2.Did you try the Simple File Sharing suggestion? It sounds as though XP Pro may be using an ACL (Acess Control List). By enabling Simple File Sharing, no passwords are required and ACL is disabled. ACL is only available for XP Pro, which is why the XP Home machines are working as normal.To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP Professional, follow these steps: 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.)(Use Simple File Sharing is at the very bottom. If it is already checked, uncheck it and click apply, then recheck and click OK)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040Note that on Windows XP Professional computers that are not joined to a domain with simple file sharing enabled and on Windows XP Home Edition computers, all users are authenticated as guests. stephmayes Posted March 14, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 14, 2007 SCMChecked the XP prof laptop .. it already has the file sharing ticked in the tools option under my computer.There is only the administrator on the laptop. There is a Guest user name shown however its turned off ?Ive just had to restore my laptop (2) coz when i just saved a document it said this facilty wasnt accessible !! What anti-virus and Firewall are you using on the computers?Here are a few tips I read that may apply:Click Start > Control Panel > double click Network Connections > right-click the desired connection > Properties > Advanced tab, Under Internet Connection Firewall uncheck or check the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.Be sure the Computer Browser Service is running... Right click My Computer, Manage, System Tools, Services, Double Click the Computer Browser service, set to Automatic, OK.Turn on the Guest AccountIndividual Accounts in Windows XP Pro for remote users logging in from other computures on the local network, etc. cannot have blank password.
