hammb Posted March 12, 2007 Report Share Posted March 12, 2007 My computer unfortunately got a virus (Trojan) in the winlogon.exe fileMy anti virus software was not able to clean the virus or delete the file so I stopped the process and deleted the file (winlogon.exe). Then I copied the good winlogon.exe file from a backup source and pasted in the c:\windows\system32 folder. Now I get stuck in the endless Reboot LoopI tried going to the recovery console and reconfiguring the boot.ini file (sounded good at the time)and this did not help. I've tried Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with command prompt, Last Known Good Configuration, you name it.. i tried it.The problem is... right when the login screen is supposed to pop up.. where you select the account to log into... the PC reboots. Every time. Everything seems to run smoothly up to that point as if nothing was wrong. I can get to the recovery console without a problem... Scarecrow Man Posted March 13, 2007 Report Share Posted March 13, 2007 You can run a chkdsk /r from the recovery console.Another good idea might be to restore the original winlogon.exe.Boot the recovery consolelog into your installationCD system32REN winlogon.exe winlogon.oldCD dllcacheREN winlogon.exe winlogon.oldThen, replace it with the one on the CD.expand D:\i386\winlogon.ex_ -r c:\windows\system32-----The above assumes your hard drive is C, and the CD-ROM is D. Ive renamed and copied the winlogon.exe file from 2 different XP CDs and I still get stuck in the reboot loop. I am trying to avoid hooking this HD up as a slave, copying the important data and doing a fresh install. Any other ideas?Thanks for all you help.
