Internet- Beast Or Best

Well with the return of Shevaun and the aprehension of the ex-marine we are sure to hear lots about the evils of the internet. How it is always frequented by peadophiles, how every user is some sort of social misfit and how the only things it could possibly be used for are porn and chatrooms.

So, are we all promoting satans work, are we all spawn of the devil and secret pornographers (or not so secret in andsomes case) or should parents really exercise control of their children?

Theres nothing like a good strappin to keep them there kids inline....

But seriously a little commen sense off the parents (eg when paying £800 + for a pc ... pay a bit more por either a firewall or filtering program) and a long discussion with the kids should keep things like this in check.

how could the parents let her surf for eleven hours, these cases must be rare otherwise why would they generate so much publicity, there was a teenage boy burnt to death by 2 other teenages in a skip in the northeast on the night before so why did gmtv not spend all morning discussing that all it got was a tiny write up in the dailys.

Ellas has a point....... surfing for eleven hours at a time is not healthy. Even I don't do that.

Parents should monitor their kids internet usage closely. Have some sort of strong filter on and ban chat rooms all together.

My 12 yr old lad can't get enough of the internet.

He's only here on weekends but he spends most of it chatting to his "friends" at http://www.habbohotel.com.

He's exchanged (msn) addresses with loads of other kids and regularly "voice chats" with most of them.

I'm quite happy with that as I can actually HEAR that they are, indeed,a 13 yr old girl, and not a perverted old nonce.

I watch him like a hawk, and always question him on new contacts. He knows not to release details of his address, mobile number, school etc.His gives his location as South Yorkshire!!

It's been said that lots of parents use pcs and the internet as a free babysitter....not me!! I appreciate the fact that my son (and myself) can use them to embrace new cultures and gain new "friends".

I also appreciate there are wierdos out there looking for their next victim.

I've been party to a situation which involved a friend of a friends 15 yr old daughter being "groomed" by a "15 yr old lad in the usa"....yeah right!!

More like a 50 yr old kiddy-fiddler in a dirty mac!!!

The mistake the mother made was letting her daughter have a PC in her own bedroom.

Luckily her Mum had the common sense to monitor her Yahoo message archives.

The cut n pasted transcripts that were sent to me were horrific!! (I was advising her how to proceed with the situation)

At the end of the day he managed to get her home address and phone number....but for all sorts of odd reasons his phone number never worked and he couldn't tell her his home address.

IE :- All take and no give!!!

The Mum eventually took away her ability to go online and everything settled OK.I,personally, would have brought in the police but they were happy she was OK and safe.

The thing is,it is our responsibility to look out for our kids....shevaughns parents failed her...miserably.

The internet isn't a bad thing...with proper care it's perfectly safe for our kids.

I certainly don't need Carol "1 from the bottom and 2 up top" Vorderman telling me how to be a good parent!!

ANY BAD story connected to the internet always makes major headlines and for all the wrong reasons

As Ellas said, the only reason that the story about the kid who was burned to death in a skip DIDN'T make huge waves was because AN INTERNET related story grabbed all the major headlines.

Long live the internet, along with discretion, patience, integrity and care!!

Cheers.

Shirl.

Well now Shirl, if the Penningtons had been half as diligent as you are then their daughter might still be mooning over the latest boy band instead of running away with an American marine.

Nothing wrong with the internet, just the people who use it in many cases. If parents just leave kids to it and show no interest in what they are doing, then trouble will result. It's the same as sitting them in front of the telly and paying no attention to what they watch.

I'm privelidged to know and understand that the "net" is full of paedofile wierdos looking to score with "our kids"

I use that info to safe-guard my kids....because no-one else will bother..

carole vorderman means well....but she is bloody clueless as to the extent of the problem..

Her online prowess seems limited to advertising Benecol....

I would like to say to all parents,.....watch your kids like a hawk...Carol V. couldn't give an arse about your kid(s)

Her fake laugh makes me feel sick on Countdown

If you love your kids....watch your kids

Cheers

Serious subject of course but you already have my view. Couldn't resist the Vorderman bit though. Shirl you have to admit that she is a looker, in fact she makes my toenails curl up in anticipation, but that awful laugh brings me down to earth with a bump. Also I wish that that wet d*** Whitely would not continuously refer to the first, second and third HALVES of a three part program.
