LonelyPixel Posted April 7, 2007 Report Share Posted April 7, 2007 Hi,I installed the "ANI patch" KB925902 on my desktop computer recently and there was no problem at all. Today I did so on my notebook but it fails every time I try. The Windows update window says "Initialising installation..." and after a while, I get twice the Visual Studio 2005 debugger window asking me to debug svchost.exe because it had an unhandled exception. File sharing network connections (SMB) are closed immediately, internet still works. It must be the "Server" service that crashed there, or something else inside that address space. When I try to debug the process, VS says it can't do that, after waiting a few minutes. I then had to force-power-off my notebook because nothing worked anymore.The notebook is running the pre-installed (Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad X60s) Windows XP Pro, SP2, all other patches installed.What can I do to get that patch on my system? Is there a way I can replace the relevant files manually? Is there another installation package, maybe through the Windows update website?I fear asking Microsoft for support won't help anything as they won't reply me. It looked like it has installed the update, but after a restart, the yellow tray icon is still there and Windows' update client wants to install that patch again. What's up there? trackrat Posted April 8, 2007 Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 Thanks for that Nel, I switched on my computer this morning and got DLL problems and found it was the last Microsoft update.After MS Windows update some users have had this problem (or similar): The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL. According MS information it's a bug in their update and this problem occurs only on Windows XP SP2. More details are available here [support.microsoft.com] and the hot fix from MS is here [support.microsoft.com].The hotfix cured the problem.Zone alarm was corrupted, open office would not work at all, I lost my internet connection, and several other programs would not function.Good old Microsoft. LonelyPixel Posted April 8, 2007 Author Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 I already described that in my initial posting. A process "svchost.exe" crashed twice while trying to install the patch. There was no error after installing the patch because it didn't even install at that point.Later, I found the separate package from the MS download site, which installed perfectly then. Afterwards, the yellow shield tray icon re-appeared and the update client offered me the same update again that I had just installed. I didn't try to install it again and just closed the window. (This usually works fine, the updates remain there for later installation then.) But today, I haven't seen the icon anymore, maybe it took a while for the update client to notice the newly installed update...So I don't think I can reproduce the reported error because another version of the update did install then. nellie2 Posted April 8, 2007 Report Share Posted April 8, 2007 Oh I see... sorry for the misunderstanding, you can check to see if the Security update is installed by going to Add/Remove programs, make sure the 'show updates' box is ticked (its at the top of the window), then scroll down and you will see all your updates listed, you should see Security Update for Windows XP (KB925902) in the list Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
