Memory Problem

Recommended Posts

I have an IBM thinkpad T20.

I have recently upgraded the memory from 128 x 2 sticks to 2 x 256 sticks. Having installed the memory sticks into the only 2 slots I have. The laptop worked fine for about a week. Then it started crashing and freezing occasionally. Then Microsoft error messages were coming up, when a report was sent, it said one of the device drivers were faulty.

Then another microsoft error report said some hardware was causing the problem.

So I remembered about the memory installation. I have now took one of the 256's out and it seems to be working fine without error messages or freezing up.

Is there any way i can interrogate the system and establish if the actual slot is working as I have tried the 256 that is working now in the suspect slot, the machine just beeps at me without booting up.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Thanks

Steph

Try each memory DIMM seperatley. If it works, then try them in the other slot seperatley.

I was just checking http://www.lenovo.com for your computer and I was presented with some choices:

Brand: Notebook

Family: T20

Type: this is where I get lost. The choices are 2647 and 2648

Model: about 50 different models after selecting the Type.

Is there any labels on your computer that show this information?

SCM,

Its a 2647..

I tried the memory stick that works in the 'other' slot, all that happens is the laptop fails to boot up, screen remains black power button is on however it just bleeps at me.

when I swop it, it works in the other slot..

when i put the dodgy memory stick in the 'working 'slot it again does the above..blank screen, bleeps at me...Do you think its the slot thats not working ? Are they repairable ?

thanks..as always, you are spot on to reply to my pleas !

Sometimes computers are quite picky. If there is no RAM in DIMM0, the computer does not work. Therefore my above suggestion may be useless.

Let me see if I understand what you're saying.

Memory stick 1 works in slot 1.

Memory stick 1 does not work in slot 2.

Memory stick 2 works in slot 1.

Memory stick 2 does not work in slot 2.

Memory sticks 1 and 2 do not work together in either configuration.
