BT Broadband

I have been browsing the BT site to determine their telephone and broadband offerings compared with my current set up on cable.

Can anyone on the BT broadband 3 package explain this........

I understand that BT provide a wireless box at the phone incomer which broadcasts around the house. All computers connect via wireless.

I have a laptop which is already wireless enabled and a desktop which isn't - because at present it connects to a wireless router by ethernet cable. I have two printers connected to the desktop which are not network equipped and are thus shared via the desktop to enable printing from the laptop.

If I changed to BT - I assume I would need to fit a wireless device of some sort to the desktop so it could connect to the internet. The BT site shows a USB thingy which does this - but warns that it will not work with dual processors and does not list Vista in the OS's supported. I have an Intel Duo core 6600 and Vista - and wonder if this will be a problem. If so - is there another way.

Also - I notice that my laptop is much slower browsing the internet than the desktop - is this because the desktop connects to the router by cable - rather than wireless. If so - will the BT setup prove to be much slower when the desktop connects by wireless.

Finally - how will I share my printers with the laptop.

The BT Home Hub has two Ethernet connectors, a USB output, an Internet phone output as well as its wireless capability.

I have my "prime" machine connected by Ethernet i.e. wired in and the other two connected wirelessly. The wireless adapters on the satellite machines are anonymous items of Chinese origin and I've had them a long time - long before the Home hub.

The whole thing worked as soon as I'd swapped the previous Netgear router and connected it up (and put the codes into the satellite machines). I have no problems with it at all. The satellite machines are a little bit slower with their connection but not significantly so.

Don't know about Vista as I don't use it.
