Lemmy
Last week I lost web access from home XP machine & modem (dial up account to our local library). The facts:- I can dial in and make connection but not reach any websites. - I get my dynamic IP adress ok and brief traffic occurrs between client and server.- I cannot ping my two DNS or any other site other than my own IP (however I do get a response from the router(?) stating destination unreachable). Brief traffic does occur when i try to ping.- ipconfig /all shows the default gaetway is the same as my IP which is apparently indiciative of the problem (how to fix?)- ipfonfig /all indicates dhcp is "not enabled" for my dial up adapter however, it shows up in system.services as running.- I tried ipconfig /renew <adapter> but got message that DHCP was not enabled for that adapter- I tried ipconfig / release but that did not seem to help (I forget the exact message).Any suggestion would be appreciated. I know the guy running the network has been changing upstream network provider and think there is a chance somethin on his end is amiss - however no one else seems to have any problems I am told. Support from the provider is very sparse due to lack of resources there (he offered to look at my machine in off hours but I am unable to arrange that). Thanks,
cozofdeath
In your tcp/ip properties make sure "Obtain an IP/DNS address automatically" is checked in the General tab and that "Automatic private IP address" is checked in the Alternate Configuration tab. If that does not work try going to Start, run and type "netsh diag gui" without the quotes and click "Scan your system". Post back any errors that show. You could also post an ip config /all to help troubleshoot.

Here is some information:- Automatic IP is (and always has been) enabled- I have to (and always have had to) input two specific DNS #'s for my account, for some reason the automatic DNS option does not work (has never worked). We tried it today both ways (see below for details). First (normal) dial up with specified DNS: netsh diag gui: * Net adapter failed [00524291] WAN miniport (IP) failed -> DNSServersearchorder failed (my two DNA #'s were listed here). Can not ping my DNS (same as before). * To my suprise no error was reported in the default gateway tab. However the default gateway is once again the same as my IP, and this address can be pinged (not too suprisingly). The same address for both was verified by running ipconfig / all . Second dial up trying automatic IP: * No errors reported by netsh diag scan. * No DNS was found (no connectivity). * I assume the ISP is not set up to run this way and that the DNS must always be supplied (as in the past). I'm not sure why since this seems the common setting everywhere else.Additional info: I brought a laptop home from work last night, dialed in and had exact same symptoms (same default gateway and IP adress, similar report from ipconfig / all). Seems to me like possibly a problem on ISP side? I could not post logs for the scan today since my wife did them at home. Also I am hesitant to post screen shot of ipconfig after reading the pinned message about private IP's, because it seems a few of the numbers are outside the range listed as "safe".Thanks again for the help. Lemmy
Update - problem solved. Apparently I had a "bad" set of DNS numbers. Our ISP (a one-man operation) just recently changed upstream service. Around this time is when my problem occurred. When I called about this, the response was that something must be amiss with my machine because no one else seemed to have problems. He verified my DNS numbers (in fact one had changed from my previous settings, but this did not reslve the situation). I am fairly confident that the older DNS numbers must have been the source of the problem. After sending him a detailed message about the 2nd machine having the same problem, he then forwarded me a new set of DNS numbers. It would seem to me that the obvious solution would be to have automatic DNS. I have no idea why this is not the case. ANy thoughts? I am more than motivated to pass along feedback as I have little confidence in reliable service. This kind of stuff has happened before. Thanks again.Mike (aka Lemmy)
