Outlook 2003 -> Outlook 2003

My father got a new computer because his last (and very old one) was a mess. It barely runs, and oftens hangs and crashes. He was able to get on to burn his outlook 2003 pst files from documents & settings\username\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook

Outlook 2003 on the old computer will not run properly to try exporting. It just hangs with an hour glass on start.

He copied this to his laptop and tried importing it, but it gave him an access denied message ( I assume it kept the security settings from the old computer) Is there someway he can strip those access restrictions or otherwise access the file, while keeping in mind he can't go through the normal export process?

It's because he wrote it to CD, it will have the READ ONLY attribute. Remove this and it will allow access.

Once the read-only attribute is removed, launch Outlook, then use File | Open | Outlook Data File.

Do not use Import to open a PST file; you will lose many formatting and Contact data!

Outlook Export and Import is meant to exchange data with other applications such as Outlook Express or Excel.

P.S. Another problem that arises sometimes after transporting a PST file is that the file may not be consistent because Outlook was not closed on the old PC when the PST file was copied.
