USB devices not recognized II

Recommended Posts

Windows XP Home, Pentium 4, 256 MB RAM.

Desk-top does not recognize new XD Card Reader. In Device manager there is a yellow question mark with exclamation mark for Mass Storage Device. When I double click on the question mark it says:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

When I click on reinstall driver it asks to use the installation disk, which I tried with no success.

I had the same problem trying to use a thumb drive and digital camera several months ago. I have no problem with my lap-top recognizing these items as soon as they are plugged in.

Any ideas on what the problem might be and what I can try to do to resolve this problem?

Thanks,

Al

I had a code 28 USB error last week. It was due to me connecting a card reader/hub to another hub before it connected to the motherboard USB ports. If I connected the device directly to the USB connectors on the motherboard, everything was OK.

The same thing happened when I tried to connect to a USB PCI card. The device had to be connected direct to the M/B.

I don't know if this applies in your case but, it's worth checking.

Hi al-nj :)

I see from your profile your OS is Windows XP Home, and you have tried clicking Update Driver this starts the Hardware Update Wizard, can you please post what drivers you installed and the make of this card reader also which USB port you are using as XP will support many USB devices with its own drivers and see the device as a drive, i would disconnect the card reader then boot your PC then shut down, reconnect the reader and boot your PC again without loading any drivers from a disk, i use a 4 port hub / cad reader on Windows XP drivers "see picture"

I am not using a hub, there are two USB ports on the back of my computer connected directly to the mother board. I did what Sakura suggested, with no improvement.

I have a scanner connected to one of the USB ports that the computer recognizes and operates normally. I switched devices to the other ports to check if one of the ports is faulty; no change.

As I mentioned in my initial post, I have the same problem with a thumb drive and a digital camera. Several months ago both of these devices operated normally. I must have done something to prevent the computer from recognizing these devices, I wish I knew what it was. When I first noticed this problem I tried System Restore, but that didn't help.

Hi al-nj :)

From your last post as the scanner works of the two USB ports and card reader / flash drive wont this may well be corrupt USB drivers that are a part of your Windows XP OS, the next thing or two things you can do is uninstall all USB drivers and reinstall them from your Windows XP home disk or perform a clean install of Windows XP Home (both actions require the Microsoft Windows XP Home Disk)

1) To uninstal and load USB drivers

Open Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager. Expand the "Universal Serial Bus

Controllers" category (click on the + sign), right-click on each item in the category in turn and select Uninstall. When all items in the

category have been uninstalled shut down and restart the computer. It will redetect the USB items and reload the drivers. You may be asked for the Windows XP CD or for driver files at that time. When it is finished (an additional reboot may be necessary) your USB devices should once again be functional.

2) Clean install of Windows XP

Set boot to CD Drive via BIOS, place Windows XP Home Disk in your CD Drive and finalise BIOS setting, your PC will boot from Disk (do format your HDD / Boot Drive then follow on screen instructions to load Windows XP Home.

Hope this helps, Sakura :)

Thanks Pops and Sakura, I appreciate your suggestions. Sakura, I ended up having to reinstall XP which solved the problem; now I have to reinstall all the updates.

Thanks again,

Al

PS: Sakura is a pretty and unusual name, where does it come from and does it have a meaning? Just curious.
