Coreper Posted May 9, 2007 Report Share Posted May 9, 2007 I've got a question which has been bothering me for quite some while, but I'll tell a few things first.People who use or have used uTorrent, will notice that it downloads at great speeds, but it slows down your internet very much.While Internet has been slowed down enormously, MSN/WLM just keeps going at full speed. I find this weird, because they are both using the internet.The slowed down internet doesnt depend on the browser [i think, because i have tested it with several browsers: IE6, IE7, Opera, Netscape]So, what I've been wondering is: why does internet slow down enormously, but does MSN/WLM keep going at full speed?Would this be caused by the way they connect to the internet or something...?thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I can't explain it but MSN/WLM may have a constant "pipe" opened to the internet, and it keeps a reserved amount of bandwidth in case it is needed.The internet however, will change its bandwidth depending on what you are trying to load. uTorrent will just use as much as it possibly can (by taking away from others)Again, I may be totally wrong. cozofdeath Posted May 13, 2007 Report Share Posted May 13, 2007 I know msn uses a different protocol than http and like Scarecrow man has said I believe it has a constant connection. I know http is a stateless protocol so when you request something and get the parts you need the connection is dropped thats why its hard to do sessions in forums and websites like that. Thats where cookies and some other things come in. And I know messenger protocols use very small packets and I'm sure there is some kind of bandwidth control or balancing of some kind. I know some programs in Windows use bandwidth throttling. I have no clue about torrents. I use them and have a gist of what its about but I never looked into it deeply.
