Zetsumei Posted May 18, 2007 Report Share Posted May 18, 2007 I'm coming back to windows xp after using Linux for over 2 years because I have been playing some games on my Vista laptop -_-, I still don't know why HP ships with that POS, but back on topic. I'm wondering if it's wise to setup 2 partitions, one for the OS and one for my programs and other things. I have over a TB of space so how big should I make my OS parition and how big for my programs partition? I still have linux on this drive, which takes up about 200gb of space so that leaves me with around 800gb space give or take a few gigs. Also, do you reccomend aVast anti-virus or is there another free one out there? I have spysweeper which I'm debating on installing so give me some feedback on that to. Since I haven't used XP for so long, which services are not essential to have on? I'm a web devloper and I'll usually just need the server services, and remote access services. mcb2001 Posted May 19, 2007 Report Share Posted May 19, 2007 I run an FTP, appache as webserver, PHP and mysql.I got ONE partion of my harddrive for the system ©, ONE for programs (appache, mysql, php and games) (D), ONE for the webcontent (E) and ONE for private data (F).The reason for doing this is so that i minimize the risk of hacking.The FTP only allows acces to the webfolder, placed in the root of the E drive, the same for php, appache.The MySQL is having the database in a folder in the root on the E drive aswell, forcing it to only access the E drive.In case hackers get past my security, they likely just end up having access to the "replaceble" content on the E drive, which makes me worry alot less.In case a good hacker drops by, and access the root of the programs, he is still stuck on the D drive, unable to get to the operating system.So in all, partion up your drive!By the way, i got 20Gb for the system, 40g for the programs, 40g for programs and 100 for private data.
