compress files

Hi,

I need to compress some windows files into one file and send them in e-mail. Some

photos, docs. Most e-mail have a limit of 10MB so i want to compress

them to upto 10MB files. Is there a simple way to do this or a batch

way. Does it have some thing like gzip. I did a 'send to compressed

(zipped) folder' but i think it just combined the files and did not

compress. thanks for help.

Never had much success doing this file compression stuff - especially emailing the compressed files which, when they get to the other end, often can't be opened.

As you have a number of pictures (as opposed to one big one) why not send them in several emails? - Size problem solved. :)

well, the most compressing program i found is winRAR from rarlabs.

If you select the folder (with all the files in it) then select add to archive, selects "best" under compression method i can compress both jpeg's and divx movies up to 50%, without dataloss...

If you use Windows XP (or higher), you can use Windows' own compressed folders mechanism; it compresses it into ZIP files. See http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...s/vz_ovrvw.mspx.

I'm assuming that the pictures you're sending are JPEGs, and you have to remember that JPEGs are compressed already. You won't gain much by zipping them (I zipped ten pictures which wound up being 8.78 MB uncompressed and 8.73 MB compressed).

the compression methods used in JPEG and rar/zip are not in any way comparable!

So if you first of all uses a program that offers "best" or like as compression method (longer time compression, due to more byte by byte comparision) you can sometimes compress jpgs up to 50% depending on the complexity and color choices of the image!!
