How to create 3 address books in OE?

Hello, I have 3 Identities in Outlook Express for which I wish to create 3 separate address books - one for each identity.

I know contacts have accumulated in each identity but I can't use many of these because either I don't want them on my list, or they don't care to be on it. They are just casual email exchanges.

My Question: After I hopefully learn how to create my 3 address books, is it possible to also KEEP those contacts spontaneously created by OE separately from the address books? This way I'll keep them only as reference.

Your address book is stored in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User.wab

This is the common address book for every identity on Outlook Express. However, you will notice there are folders like, "Main Identity's Contacts", or "Secondary Identity's Contacts". These can only be viewed by the identity logged in.

I do not believe there is a way to store a seperate address book, but unless the contacts are in the 'shared contacts' folder they should only appear for the user currently logged in.

You may want to use a different user, rather than an identity, for a truly seperate address book.

Scarecrow Man, thank you. I still don't know how to create my address books, but I'll just forget about creating things that aren't within the internet rules. I shouldn've never asked how to create a stand-alone contacts apart from my 3 AB since I can hardly understand how to do the things under the rules... LOL!

I will continue using my Word to copy my list names from and paste them into the BCC or TO (whichever necessary) until I understand these things better.

When I had Win98 I was able to create my own AB which I had divided into 3 or 4 segments for my different lists without problem and without having to ask others! But it seems as tech things get upgraded they become more difficult (outright impossible for most of us, non-tech persons)! Sigh! :)

What I am saying, is create a new user account. (start > control panel > user accounts). This way, you will have a completely seperate address book.

I believe this is the only way to have a seperate address book.

Hi...I went to the User Accounts (didn't know it existed). Is a new user account like having an additional identity? I'd probably have to ask my server if I'm allowed to have more accounts?

Actually what I was thinking was to keep the contact lists right where they are now, separate from my 3 address books, rather than creating a 4th address book or additional account. i.e., wanted to keep the contacts being continually added to by the system while I work independently with my 3 ABs. Is this possible? If not, as I said before, it'll be easier not to create an additional list, as I'm only complicating things... :D

I better concentrate on creating these 3 blessed ABs... LOL!

If you are doing this at your workplace, you should speak with your administrator before changing any user accounts. And yes, a new user is like a new identity, except its a new identity for the entire computer, not just the e-mail. You will have a seperate desktop, favourites, and My Documents.

You may want to try a 3rd party address book. Of course, speak with your administrator before installing any software.

Oh no, SM, I volunteer in my home for a number of charities on my own computer. When I went to see the user accounts I guess the system considered me the administrator, but I decided not to open an extra account after all. As mentioned, I think I better forget about the extra list which I wanted before I knew how complicated things can get... LOL!

Since I have a few more glitches, etc. I may have to ask this moderate fee techi to come for maybe an hour and see how many of these glitches he can catch as it takes me days for just one little glitch to correct...or not even correct one! ;)
