debaser2
Hello, I recently tried to start "fresh" by reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Now I am having problems, and it's been nearly impossible to install any updated drivers or do Windows Update in general. It all started when I tried to simply run Windows Update to get my Windows up to date with security fixes and SP2. I ended up getting a blue screen with an error about nv4_disp and a repeating loop. The second problem is that I can instal the drivers from the cd that came with my computer 4 years ago, but if I try to update any of them (such as my graphics card drivers) I get a blank black screen after restart. This happens with almost all drivers I try to update. The only way to fix it is the then restart in Safe Mode and uninstall the driver I just installed.I'm assuming the problem with Windows Update comes in because it possibly tries to update some drivers for me which insn't working. I contacted NVidia about the nv4_disp problem and they said that it could be a number of things, not necessarily my graphics card, even though the error says so. They said that since the graphics card is always writing to the screen it gets blamed first as a problem. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, or the steps I should take when I reload Windows and start fresh? I've tried multiple time in the past couple days now to just wipe everything out and start over, but each time I get to the same result. Thanks in advance! debaser2
Hello, thanks for the response. I think part of the problem comes from when my computer "finds new hardware" with a VGA Monitor and GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and automatically installs the drivers for it. My computer was doing fine until a restart, and the found new hardware popped up on the bottom right side of the screen. It automatically installed the display drivers, and now my monitor flicks to black every 15-30 seconds. It also flickers a pixel or two line every so often. Is there possibly a problem with my graphics card? Is there any way to diagnose if this is the problem or not?
