Lokolo
ok few days ago computer crashed and my computer automatically ran chkdsk on startup.Error 1:since then if i try to run device manager (or any other Admin tools) I get the error:"MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventvwr.msc.This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."Error 2:I now cannot use the search, if I go to File, Search I get the error:"A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup"Error 3:I cannot log into MSN Live Messenger. I load it, it lags, i enter my info, press Sign in and get an error message which leads to a microsoft page (which states there are no fixes).Error 4:I cannot load Windows Update Website. Just a blank page.___________________________________________________________________________I wasn't sure if these are all related but meh.Ok i have tried SFC /SCANNOW - this runs perfectly with errors, I then 'fix' these errors (it comes up with insert CD, i do so, press retry and it continues). However, once this finishes, i run it again, and errors still occur (er...?)The Windows Update thing - ActiveX etc. are all on so there should be prolems with updating. Some sites say MSXML is the problem. (RegSvr32 in run) - 1 is ok, 2 is ok, 3 however gives errorError:"LoadLibrary("MSXML3.DLL") failed - A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed."_________________Wow long post - hope someone read to this point and maybe can help (LOL).I was thinking about stuffing it all and reinstalling but this is a last resort kinda thing. Boris
This may be a silly question, but have you tried to do a System Restore back to a point before your crash ?
Lokolo
This may be a silly question, but have you tried to do a System Restore back to a point before your crash ?Yep!!Totally weird. I first restored back to the 2nd (a day before it all happened) and this didn't work. Left it a few days, and yesterday I restored back to the 27th or something, still problem. Its quite annoying because I can't go into Systems Logs to see what the problem is because of the MMC problem! (ironic eh)[EDIT] nah not a silly question, its something like that I would miss
Boris
Ok :)Next suggestion - try a repair of your XP installation ?See this excellent guide from our very own Chris :-http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/repair_...lation_xp.shtmlRepairing an installation is a lot less time consuming then reformatting and reinstalling. You also have the advantage that you do not need to reinstall any applications and your documents/files will remain.
