I recently tried to reformat my computer but realized I no longer have my product key for XP. Well, I figured i'd just use this as a chance to buy Windows Vista and upgrade within the 20 days I have before windows shuts down. However, I wanted to know if the Vista upgrade will work if my windows XP is still waiting for activation? Do I have to enter my product key into XP before I can update? Would I do better to just spend the money on a new copy of XP?As for now, imma keep looking for my product key. Thankyou for reading this. trackrat Posted July 17, 2007 Report Share Posted July 17, 2007 Taken from another forum.Microsoft has set a lot of restrictions on Vista, but if this latest one holds true, it could mean the difference between upgrading or not for some people. Apparently if you buy an upgrade version of Windows Vista for your XP machine, Windows Vista will invalidate your XP key (so you won't be able to set up a dual-boot option nor will you be able to use that version of XP on another machine). Not only that, but if you ever uninstall Vista, you won't be able to fall back on your copy of XP anymore.
