-pops- Posted July 16, 2007 Report Share Posted July 16, 2007 USB ports supply power (500mA at 5V, I think) to the item connected to them (not always used but the facility is there). Because of this you are limited by the total power available from the motherboard in the machine. There may be ways of "fiddling" this by using powered hubs.I have built machines with 16 USB2 ports without any problems but never tried any more as they have not been asked for. Most can only support 2, as this is all the IRQ allows. Windows may be able to support thousands, but if there are no IRQ's available, then there is no point.
