however, my second drive (D:) i have windows on and everything but i want to be able to access all my old documents on C:, but can't.

anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

p.s. the error i get when tryin to get into C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME is 'C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME is not accesible. Access is denied'

Did you use encryption in the drive Windows was installed first? I would not know how to deal with encryption but I will suggest you a work around to get your files back (I understand you just want to recover them).

Download a Linux Live CD, Ubuntu is quite suitable for the task of reading files in NTFS partitions, burn it and boot the computer with it. Once set you will see a desktop from which you should see your old Windows partition (and the new too). Just browse the old partition and back up your files in USB sticks or whatever (if you have a CD/DVD burner in another bay you could use it too).

A direct link to get Ubuntu is http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Good luck.

Staff.

are referring to the C drive? did you try to install and things went wrong?

if that is the case it is unlikely that you have any documents to access.

I would take Staff's advice ,though I personally think Knoppix is faster than Ubuntu

no no the document are still there - otherwise i have 40GB missing from my drive of 'nothing'. I have just been installing windows over the top but first try it seemed to corrupt on installation so I was HMPHing about and installed it on another drive.

I will try to install windows again on it but no idea if that'll work!
