registry issue

Recommended Posts

I have an HP F380 which is an all in 1 printer/scanner/copier. Suddenly the scanner stopped working and I got a comms error. The printer and copier continue to work OK. I installed the machine on another computer and the scanner works fine so it was not hardware.

I went through exhaustive testing, installing and reinstalling routines with HP support who were great. This included deleting certain things from the registry etc and a hundred other ideas. In the end they concluded it was not an HP problem but something in my registry. That my be, but that is not much help if you are not confident in regedit, and I certainly am not.

Anyone got any ideas as to how to start to solve this issue. I suppose a complete system reinstall will solve everything but I am trying to avoid that.

Suddenly the scanner stopped working ...

Did you do anything specific before the problem started, e.g. install some new software, install Windows updates, run a registry cleaner, or anything else?

Can you try a system restore to a point before the problem started?

If the system restore doesn't work, I would uninstall the device drivers for that HP F380, then install the newest drivers available from the HP download site.

Yes, if I remember correctly I deleted a load of small utility programs i no longer use and did a registry sweep with CCleaner

OK, the registry sweep...

I am a great admirer of CCleaner, but I personally do not recommend the registry (issues) scan. In fact, I am very much against use of any "registry cleaner". And if someone has a real issue they think they can fix with a registry cleaner, then I backing up the registry beforehand (ERUNT) is a must.

Now CCleaner also offers a backup of the registry items it removes. Did you do the backup? If so, can you try to restore it?

If that doesn't help, uninstall the current F380 drivers, then reinstall the newest one from the link I gave earlier.

Let us know how it goes.

Pat,

Thanks. No, I do not remember doing a back up before the sweep. Stupid I know.

I went to the link you gave and was offered a check. This was the result and it looks like I am already using the latest driver:

HP All-in-One Check detected the following:

Connected All-in-One: HP Deskjet f310/f325/f335/f340/f350/f370/f375/f378/f380/...

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP

Connection Port: USB

Results:

You are using the latest driver!

A check of your driver settings shows no problems.

OK folks, thanks for your help. Here is how I got it working again:

After several more attempts at a system restore failed, just for the hell of it I tried a scan. Got the same comms error as usual, but this time for some reason up popped an HP troubleshooter specifically regarding USB Coms Error; this never happened before in a week of playing around with it. Previously I had gone to a general troubleshooting page.

Anyway, there were 11 suggested actions, most of which I had been through with HP before but this one worked:

I was asked to go here in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}

and remove a string 'lower filters' in the right hand pane.

Anyway, it is now working as funnily enough is my webcam which had also apparently stopped working although I never use it so had not noticed until I was informed onscreen it was now working again.

I have tried from several previous dates but all do not work, saying it cannot be restored.

Can you try a system restore to a point before the problem started ?

Its not clear from your last reply. Have you tried doing a System Restore as Pat suggested ?
