onearmedpanda
i am trying to update my bios on my dell dimension 2350. i got the bios update straight from the dell site, put it on a floppy, and booted from the floppy. all seemed well until the update started taking longer than i thought; i've seen a pink screen with the flashing words "BIOS update in progress" for over an hour now (i don't know how much updating could possibly go on, using a 1.44 mb floppy), i would restart and try it again but the update in progress it says please do not turn off your computer.. please wait.. and my os is already screwed and i don't want to mess up my bios too. does anyone know if it should be taking this long, and if not what i can do to fix it without messing anything up? thanks a bunch :)
Boris
Was the BIOS version you downloaded from here ?http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...-1&impid=-
Scarecrow Man
If you reboot, loose power, or cancel a bios update while it is in progress your computer has just become a very expensive paper weight.I see you mention you "would restart and try it again". Did you turn the computer off while the update was in progress? As a side note, you almost NEVER need to update your BIOS unless the update is to fix a problem that pertains specifically to you. onearmedpanda
just for the record i am updating the BIOS because i am having this problem: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310760i tried installing microsoft windows xp on two dimension 2350's and i had that same problem on each oneand the only thing they had in common on that solution list was the BIOS so i figured i'd try to update it and see what happens.but that just ended up causing another problem... Scarecrow Man
The bios update should only take a minute at most. It is possible the floppy disk you are using has bad sector(s). In which case, I am not sure what can be done, if anything.
Boris
i just need to know if it should be taking this long?Highly unlikely
onearmedpanda
theres a prompt under the screen, is it possible i could type anything in here to help?
Boris
BR58200.exe Description: This file contains a compressed (or zipped) set of files. Download the file to a folder on your hard drive, and then run (double-click) it to unzip the set of files. Follow the instructions to create a set of floppy diskettes, and then use the diskettes to complete the installation. This seems to suggest that you should have had a set of floppy disks created - not just one ?Perhaps its waiting for the next one ?I have no idea what the prompt requires :(You could try a - /? - but that's a complete guess ! Spaz
Why did you decide to update/reflash the BiOS? What was the initial problem? Updating the BiOS can be critical... Call Dell, and see if they have an update, or fix.
