Wireless Networking Connection icon

I have a laptop that connects to a router wirelessly by way of a PCMCIA card. My connection is called 'Stephs Connection' which is security enabled (wpa) however there is also another connection icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen which has a red cross in it which when the cursor is hung over it ,it says Wireless Network Connection.Not connected. When I doubleclick it to see what it is it brings up a window saying 'Choose a wireless Network' and there are no connections in the window ?

When I locate the connection under network connections, I cannot delete it as the delete option is greyed out.Is this safe to delete..if so how do I do it.

The reason is when i connect to the correct connection,the above connection tries to connect and always brings up a window saying im not connected to the internet but Iknow I am because 'Stephs Connection' has connected

I don't know much about this as I use cable. My daughter and a friend who both connect via a telephone line also have the same little icon. :D

In Network connections try RIGHT clicking the offending item. You should then have the opportunity of selecting Disable. You should also be able to disable by double clicking the item in the Sys tray and selecting Disable there. :)
