NvCpl

Recommended Posts

Doing a google search of NvCpl tells me about 50/50 that it's a virus or it belongs to Nvidia.

In the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) it shows as a start-up item coming from:

RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll, NvStartup

General my searches tell me that anything in the system32 folder is a virus but if the Nvidia Display Drivers was in "services.msc" then there was no problem. I tried disabling the display driver completely, I tried removing NvCpl from the start-up list and tried removing it from "RUN" in the Registry. After doing all of that both in basic boot and safe-mode, It still keeps coming back as a start-up item.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Taco.

NvCpl.exe is a very dangerous virus: W32.SpyBot.S Worm, Security Risk Rating: High Risk

but NvCpl.dll is a completely clean file: NVIDIA Display Properties Extension

DO NOT remove it, since it is your display driver

note that you have the NvCpl.DLL, and not the NvCpl.EXE

about the fact your searches for system files return virus results: virusses arent just a file, they are made as invisible as possible: almost same names as other system files, like in this case, the filetype is only different: not dll, but exe
