The opening or saving a file through several software is not working fast or sometimes not at all. Also the opening of big files (over 200mb) especially .exe files from the explorer freezes the whole explorer. For example: I want to download a file in Firefox from a web page. I click on the file ( coolfile.txt ) with my right mouse button and select "Save as..." then I choose the saving location, which takes a long time just to wonder around in my directories. I've found the place where to save the coolfile.txt. I click on "Save". After releasing the mouse button whole Firefox freezes.I am in a big need of help! Irene Posted August 28, 2007 Report Share Posted August 28, 2007 Hi XamaX, :) It may be worth deleting all the temporary files in explorer....In Explorer, Tools - Internet Options - Delete - Temporary Internet Files.Ah, sorry just noticed that you are using Firefox. A check box will appear where you can check off the cache and other items you could clear.You could also clear junk out of your machine with ccleaner click here. I clear the cache every day and cleaned my comp with ccleaner and other software a few weeks ago. I think it has nothing to do with those things. But thanks for replying. Windows has its' own defragmenter (although there are other better options to download maybe later)....Press, Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter.It is good to take the option to 'Disk Cleanup' before performing Disk Defragmenter. However, when you do this for the first time, it can take a very long time (depending on the size of your data on the HD).Do you keep Firefox open for very long periods of time? FF tends to "memory leak" a bit, so after a long time of operation it can use up a lot of unneeded memory (which may need to be paged in for certain operations).Try to close Firefox, then reopen it and try again - see if it still takes so long. Also, try the same thing with Internet Explorer.But generally, the handling of very large files can put quite a strain on Windows, as it may need to be loaded entirely into the memory. XamaX Posted September 2, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 2, 2007 It' happened when I tried to attach a file on GMail to a message, but I tried also uploading a file onto Imageshack; I could open files and move around in my directories (very very slowly, though) but when I pressed on "Cancel", Firefox froze. auto98 Posted October 22, 2007 Report Share Posted October 22, 2007 Don't ask me why, but a common cause of this is your context menu - i know it doesn't sound related, but i had what sounds like the exact same problem, someone told me to do this and it worked perfectly afterwardshttp://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html - download that, then it depends on your experience as to what to do next - if you are pretty knowledgeable, then you can disable the ones you know aren't necessary, then restart and see if the problem still exists.
