XP Pro SP2 - Services

I have been troubleshooting an Adobe Acrobat 7.0 issue regarding the Clipboard Viewer.

The problem was found that the following 3 Windows Services were disabled by default:-

- Clipbook

- Network DDE

- Network DDEDSDM

Enabling these 3 services resolved the issue with Adobe Acrobat 7.0

My question is - Why are these services disabled by default and is there any harm in enabling them in a network environment?

According to that guide, all of the above services can be safely disabled but whether there is any harm in enabling them in a network environment is not a question I can answer unfortunately.

Apparently Adobe requires ClipBook.

ClipBook is dependent on Network DDEDSDM

Network DDEDSDM is dependent on Network DDE.

This is why all 3 must be active. Why Adobe is requiring ClipBook to be started, I cannot explain as I do not use the Adobe Clipboard viewer. I find Foxit to be quite faster, and it serves all my needs for viewing PDF files.

I think its pretty safe to say these services aren't started automatically by default simply because they aren't necessary for everything in XP to function. There should be no harm in running them so your application will work.
