I_miss_C64 Posted August 31, 2007 Report Share Posted August 31, 2007 Hey, I brought this PC just a few hours ago, and I desperately need to get it running smoothly before next week, as I will need it for an important assignment. However, I have encountered numerous problems with my Windows Vista home premium, and I would love if any of you people could tell me how to deal with them.Problem 1: The computer was delivered with an enormous pile of demo software, addware and other useless crapware, of which have removed most already. However, I just cant remove the Yahoo search field in IE no matter what I do. I know that its not really important, but I want to be rid of it. How do I do?Problem 2: This one is more serious. Every time I write an e-mail and need put in the "@", I activate an annoying shortcut to the IE menu bar, and I need to click on the address bar again in order to resume typing the adress. How do I deactivate this shortcut? Please note that I am not using an english keyboard, so to type "@" I need to press ctrl+alt+2, and it is the ctrl+alt combination that triggers the shortcut.Problem 3: Windows like to update itself... all the time. And some of these updates require me to restart my computer, and often immediately without having a chance to finish what I am doing. Isnt there a way to prevent winows from suddenly loading down updates and insist on restarting while Im working? XP would never just download and install an update while I was working on something, but Vista isnt quite as polite :(I hope that someone will take the time to help me, though I realize that my questions are very.... basic. andsome Posted September 1, 2007 Report Share Posted September 1, 2007 The updating problem can be corrected in the control panel/security centre. I have mine set so that I am advised that updates are available, and I can then visit the update site when I want, and download only the updates that I want, and can make others that I don't want, hidden in future.Regarding Yahoo, that company and their over intrusive products are a pain. I once installed Yahoo Messenger so that my son could keep in touch when on a very long extended world tour. To finally completely rid myself of them, I had to edit the registry, it depends whether you are confident enough to do this. Your problems, are basically the result of buying a commercial product from a company that gets a kick back from software manufacturers, and in the process they clutter up your computer for you. It's a pity that you didn't visit here first, and you would probably have been advised that if you could not build your own, to at least go to a small local supplier and have one built to order, with only the software that you wanted.Sorry I can't help with the @problem. I_miss_C64 Posted September 1, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 1, 2007 The updating problem is now a thing of the past, thank you :) I have e-mailed Yahoo and asked them how to get rid of their companion, so I hope that they at least have the decency to do so some time next week.The @ problem remains, and it is a real pain in the backside to have to stop typing every time I need that symbol. I will be taking the computer back to the store and ask them what to do just as soon as I am done writing my assignment.Normally I would have been building my computer myself too, but the reasons why I didnt do that ths time was that the offer was impossible to beat, and that it was a laptop. Building a laptop myself is out of the question, and no company that I know of could build a computer this sweet for the kind of money I had to spend on it. Breaking it in is indeed hard to do, but as soon as I have fixed the minor issues that haunts it, as well as have gotten used to Vista, it will be a great computer.Again, thanks for your help :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
