DVD/CD-ROM drive has stopped working, driver issue.

I recently bought a Gateway laptop with Windows Vista. Everything was working fine until I installed a driver and software for a webcam that I bought. The disk drive then stopped working. I can hear the disks being read but nothing shows up on the laptop. I have uninstalled everything to do with the camera but disks still do not register. When I check the laptops driver I am told that everything is up to date and should be working fine but when I check the status of the DVD/CD-ROM drive I am given this error message:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Can anyone suggest what to do. I’m going to try putting the system disk in but I’ve been told that this probably won’t help.

It sounds like the camera driver may have modified shared files...

If your Vista cd came with your laptop like mine did...

Try inserting the vista CD and rebooting...

Pick the CD setting that allows you to keep your files but fix Windows...

If your cd is like mine you will need to create a new account...

Your drive should be working great if it is not a hardware error...

Please Note: Some Programs you may have to reinstall but all files will remain

Recommended resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.
