Windows SteadyState Problems

Recommended Posts

I work at a public library. We have a peer-to-peer network of five Windows XP computers for public internet usage in one of our locations. As expected, sadly, this is an open invitation for folks to install random programs (MyspaceIM!!) and tons of other nasty little things on our machines. I found out about Windows SteadyState through a Google search and decided to give it a try.

I put it on one of the public machines to test out. I didn't read much into it prior to installing so I decided to uninstall and find out more about the program. After taking it off the system, troubles arose like the desktop deleting shortcuts, homepage changing, etc. It was as if the program was still active and protecting the hard drive. I hadn't even enabled drive protection before taking it off! This problem was eventually remedied by deleting the user account and creating a new one.

Round 2 with SteadyState proved just as troublesome. I decided, once again, to remove the program. This time it disabled both Windows Security Center and Automatic Updates. I have tried restarting the Security Center service, and set it to come on automatically, but it goes back to being disabled each time I log back in. Also, every option is grayed out on the Automatic Update section of the control panel. The service for Automatic Update is set to automatic and Services.msc says that it's started.

Anyone have any suggestions as to a solution for this?
