In fact, there is almost no gain at all, even with the most thorough of these "cleaners". And yes, the more thorough they are, the bigger the danger that your system will malfunction after the "cleaning".If you really want to test the effect of these "cleaners", be sure to take a registry backup before you start playing. ERUNT is a very good and trustworthy registry backup program.If your system - as expected - doesn't work any more after "registry cleaning", just restore your registry from the backup. I concur. The cleaners (which I got from CNET.com) were inconsistent in number of items they detected. I had 1985 items Registry Mechanic wouldn't fix with the trial version. It automatically offers to back up, and so far I have never had to re-merge the back up. I always keep the latest two back ups, and delete the older ones after a few days. I hadn't specifically told any of the reg cleaners to back up the registry (a risk, I know), so i just used windows Restore and all is fine now. I completely got rid of the reg cleaners. If I want to use one in the future, I'll buy Reg Mechan ic and that's it.CCleaner (the cleaner formerly known as Crap cleaner) is good.
